There is something special about the mountains and foothills of Upstate South Carolina.
For some people, these places are destinations for hiking, camping, photography, and adventure. For others, they become places of reflection. Places where the noise of everyday life fades away, and the lessons of faith become easier to hear.
Many of the stories shared on Faith on the Trail began on trails, overlooks, and backroads throughout the South Carolina foothills. These are places where God’s creation has a way of slowing us down and reminding us of what truly matters.
If you’re looking for places that inspire reflection, here are a few of my favorites.

Table Rock State Park
Few places have shaped my love of hiking and faith more than Table Rock State Park.
From the Half-Mile Marker on the Table Rock Trail to the breathtaking views from the summit, every section of the trail offers lessons about perseverance, patience, and trusting God through difficult climbs.
Whether you’re standing beside Pinnacle Lake or climbing the stone steps toward the summit, Table Rock reminds us that every journey begins with a single step.

Bald Rock Heritage Preserve
Bald Rock is one of the easiest places in the Upstate to access a spectacular mountain view.
The overlook reminds us how much perspective can change when we step away from the distractions of daily life. Looking across miles of mountains often puts life’s challenges into proper perspective.
Sometimes faith grows when we simply take time to pause.

Sassafras Mountain
As South Carolina’s highest point, Sassafras Mountain offers more than just impressive views.
Standing at the state’s highest elevation serves as a reminder that some journeys require effort, patience, and determination before the reward comes into view.
The climb may not always be easy, but the destination is worth pursuing.
Jones Gap State Park
The rushing waters, towering trees, and quiet trails of Jones Gap create a setting where reflection comes naturally.
Walking beside the Middle Saluda River reminds us that God’s presence is often found in the quiet moments rather than the loud ones.

Lake Jocassee
The crystal-clear waters of Lake Jocassee have a way of creating peace.
Whether viewed from Devils Fork State Park, experienced from a kayak, or enjoyed from a waterfall tour, the lake reminds us of God’s creativity and beauty.
Some places inspire adventure. Others inspire gratitude. Lake Jocassee often does both.

Pumpkintown
Nestled at the foot of the mountains, Pumpkintown serves as a gateway to many of these remarkable places.
Its scenic roads, local history, and connection to Table Rock make it a reminder that even small communities can have a big impact on the journeys we take.
More Than a Destination
The places featured on Faith on the Trail are more than hiking destinations. They are places where lessons are learned, prayers are whispered, challenges are overcome, and faith grows stronger.
If you would like to visit these locations for yourself, be sure to explore PumpkintownSC.com for trail guides, local history, directions, lodging information, and travel resources throughout the South Carolina foothills.
After all, every journey begins with taking the first step, even when we cannot see the destination. Give us strength for the next step and faith to trust You with the rest of the journey. Amen.
