“Every hike to the summit begins with reaching the half-mile marker. Sometimes faith grows the same way—one step at a time.”
One of my favorite photos from the Table Rock Trail is not from the summit.
It is not from an overlook or a scenic vista.
It is a picture of the 1/2-mile marker.
Most people would probably walk right past it without giving it a second thought. But for me, that sign represents one of the most important lessons I have learned about faith.
Every time I hike the Table Rock Trail in Table Rock State Park, there comes a moment somewhere around that marker when I ask myself the same question:
“Why did I start this hike?”
The excitement of leaving the trailhead has worn off.
My legs are burning.
My heart is pounding.
The stone steps built into the mountainside seem endless.
And then I look at the marker.
Only half a mile.
After all that effort, I have covered just one-half mile of a trail that stretches more than three miles to the summit.
Suddenly, the mountain feels much larger than it did in the parking lot.
Faith can feel that way too.

When the Journey Feels Longer Than Expected
Most of us begin new journeys with excitement.
A new job.
A new ministry.
A new goal.
A new season of life.
We trust God and move forward, believing the path will be difficult but manageable.
Then we reach our own “half-mile marker.”
The point where reality sets in.
The point where progress seems slow.
The point where we realize the journey may take far longer than we expected.
It is often there that discouragement begins to whisper.
“Maybe I am not strong enough.”
“Maybe this was a mistake.”
“Maybe I should turn around.”
Yet those moments are not signs that we are failing.
They are often signs that we are growing.

God Strengthens Us Along the Trail
Something interesting happens after I pass that half-mile marker.
The mountain does not get smaller.
The climb does not magically become easy.
But my mindset changes.
I stop thinking about the summit.
I stop focusing on how far I have left to go.
Instead, I focus on the next section of trail.
The next turn.
The next staircase.
The next step.
Faith often grows the same way.
God rarely gives us enough strength for an entire mountain.
He gives us enough strength for the next step.
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” (Psalm 119:105, NIV)
A lamp does not illuminate the entire trail.
It simply provides enough light to keep moving forward.

The Summit Comes One Step at a Time
Standing at the summit of Table Rock Mountain, it is easy to forget how overwhelming the climb felt at the beginning.
The views stretch across the Upstate. Lake Oolenoy glimmers below. The forests of Table Rock State Park seem endless.
But none of those views would be possible without first passing the half-mile marker.
The place where quitting seems reasonable.
The place where doubts become loud.
The place where faith is tested.
Looking back, I have realized that God often does His greatest work in those moments.
Not at the summit.
Not after the victory.
But on the steep sections, we must decide whether to keep climbing.
Reflection
What is your half-mile marker today?
What challenge has left you wondering if the journey is worth it?
Instead of focusing on the entire mountain, ask God to help you take the next step.
You may be closer to the summit than you think.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for walking beside us on every climb. When the path seems steep and progress feels slow, remind us that You are working even when we cannot see the destination. Give us strength for the next step and faith to trust You with the rest of the journey. Amen.
